Miscellaneous papers, 1797-1833.

Photostatic and typewritten copies of papers of William Clark, superintendent of Indian Affairs at St. Louis, 1817-1830. Present are Clark's diary of a journey from St. Louis to the trading post at Fort Osage in 1808; excerpts from the Clark papers in the possession of the Kansas Historical Society pertaining to Indian affairs in the Upper Mississippi Valley; Clark's correspondence with Thomas Forsyth, 1797-1833, from the Tesson collection in the possession of the Missouri Historical Society; and miscellaneous pieces. Included are letters from Joseph Street to Clark at Prairie du Chien, Wis., 1830-1832; letters from Charles Hempstead, Washington, D.C., 1830; an 1808 letter from Clark to Henry Dearborn; and a journal of activities with Lewis Cass at Prairie du Chien, 1825.

Indian agent, 1812-1830. Residing in Peoria, Ill., since 1804, Thomas Forsyth was appointed Indian sub-agent without specific assignment in 1812. In 1818, he was appointed agent for the Missouri Territory and was stationed by 1821 in Sauk and Fox country at Fort Armstrong on Rock Island.
